BUILDING STRUCTURE [ARC 2522] PROJECT 2: Case Study – Renovation Work to an R.C Structure

Project 2: Case Study – Renovation Work to an R.C Structure
PART 1: GROUP COMPONENT
Project 2, renovation work to an R.C structure is project of a sideway extension towards the chosen building structure. The project consists of group and individual components are about analyzing the beams and columns found in an existing R.C structure. Our group, consists of 8 members had produced a set of measured drawings along with visuals to aid our work in this project. Thus, individual proposals are produced to introduce our understanding in beam analysis as well as, shear force and bending moment.

Measured drawings and structural plan

PART 2: INDIVIDUAL COMPONENT

For Project 2 of Building Structure, I was given a task to study the existing structure as well as propose an extension project to be carried out as a case study. The chosen existing structure is a bungalow located in Jalan U-Thant, Kuala Lumpur of 2-storeys.

a)     GROUND FLOOR EXTENSION

Materials:

                      i.        Guest Bedroom

Slab thickness
= 150mm
Slab self-weight
= 0.15m x 24kN/m3
                                      = 3.6kN/m2

                     ii.        Timber Floor Boards

Timber floor boards
= 0.15kN/m2
40mm Sand/cement screed
= 0.6kN/m2 x 40mm/25
                                                              = 0.96kN/m2
                                                              = 0.96kN/m2 + 0.15kN/m2
                                                              = 1.11kN/m2

                    iii.        Concrete Beam

Concrete floor
= 0.15kN/m2
40mm Sand/cement screed
= 0.6kN/m2x 40mm/25
                                                 = 0.96kN/m2
                                                 = 0.96kN/m2 + 0.15kN/m2
                                                 = 1.11kN/m2

                    iv.        Bathroom

Slab thickness
= 100mm
Slab self-weight
= 0.1m x 24kN/m3
                                     = 2.4kN/m2

                     v.        Brick Wall

= 3.2m x 0.15m x 19kN/m3
= 9.12kN/m

b)    FIRST FLOOR EXTENSION

Materials:

                      i.        Bedroom 3

Slab thickness
= 150mm
Slab self-weight
= 0.15m x 24kN/m3
                                      = 3.6kN/m2

                     ii.        Bathroom

Slab thickness
= 100mm
Slab self-weight
= 0.1m x 24kN/m3
                                     = 2.4kN/m2

                    iii.        Gym Room

Slab thickness
= 100mm
Slab self-weight
= 0.1m x 24kN/m3
                                     = 2.4kN/m2

                    iv.        Concrete Floor

Concrete floor
= 0.15kN/m2
40mm Sand/cement screed
= 0.6kN/m2x 40mm/25
                                                 = 0.96kN/m2
                                                 = 0.96kN/m2 + 0.15kN/m2
                                                 = 1.11kN/m2

                     v.        Concrete Beam

Beam self-weight
= Beam size x concrete density
                                                         = 0.15m x 0.5m x 24kN/m3
                                                         = 1.8kN/m
