The aim of this assignment is to translate your research into a visual representation. In the previous assignments, you were asked to plan, document and analyze data; in this assignment, you are required to transform your understanding and analysis in the form of a creative production for exhibition purpose, which manifests and visualizes your interpretations. Creative production refers to the visualization of research into a tangible form (video-recording, visual piece [2D or 3D] and etc) in a creative and experimental manner.

RE-PRESENTING PLACE [ARC 2132] PROJECT 1: RESEARCH PROPOSAL & PROJECT 2: ANALYSIS
PROJECT 1: RESEARCH PROPOSAL
The following are some possible themes which you may select:
Urban veranda: interaction between streets, pedestrian walkways and the shop-fronts (veranda as a place for people to mingle, rest)
Urban streetscapes: back lanes, signage, pedestrian network, courtyards, permeable/impermeable surroundings
Ripples of life: Religious/Spiritual, Political, Social, Cultural aspects of the city and rural areas, identity
Hybrid morphology: transition or overlapping between old and new architecture and culture, new interventions
Architectural and urban language: facades, style, massing, scale, technology, colour, texture, materials, ornamentation, nodes, grids, courtyards etc
Constructed landscapes
PROJECT 2: ANALYSIS
The
aim of our research proposal is to come up with design solutions that will help
to improve the conditions of our chosen site, as well as to show how these
improvements can increase the interaction between the people and the
environment.
Our
secondary aims are to address certain issues and weaknesses of the site, such
as safety issues at night and others, which will be further discussed at the
final part of this research.
The
objectives of this research proposal are as follows:
1.
To
create and interaction between people and the urban setting
This
is the general idea of an urban veranda. We would like to design something that
will enable people to interact with their surrounding environment; in our case
it is the empty space beneath the flyover, as well as the adjacent street.
2.
To
make the site more feasible to the passers-by and the general public.
Currently,
the site is not being fully utilized. People generally use the shady site as a
walkway, to get from one place to another. The site is situated in a busy area
of KL and we would like to propose a design idea that will enable the current
users of the site, as well as to attract more people to use the site for
various functions, for resting and mingling.
3.
To
upgrade the conditions of the site, to have a positive impact on the
surrounding built environment.
As
aforementioned, issues such as safety (due to homeless and beggars occupying
the street at night) as well as rubbish must be tackled in order for the urban
veranda to be a success and to have a positive impact on the environment.
site plan
site permeability
site movement
usage of site
future site usage
suggestions what to design
empty space underneath the LRT flyover
As
a conclusion, we feel that we have come up with a good research study that is
able to help us to come up with our own various design strategies for the urban
veranda. The interviews we conducted helped us get a clearer picture on the
public’s opinion of an ideal urban veranda setting, which will help us to
achieve Objective 2, ‘to make the site
more feasible to the passers-by and the general public’. Our observations
and site studies helped us to know the site better and to make decisions that
are wary of current site conditions and issues, which will help us to fulfill
Objective 3, ‘to upgrade the conditions
of the site, to have a positive impact on the surrounding built environment’. The various precedent
studies we did further helped us get more ideas on how the urban veranda is
being implemented overseas.
ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 3 [ARC 2116]: PROJECT 2A & 2B
Project 2 GENIUS LOCI: VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE
The final project for the module calls for a design of a Visitor Interpretive Centre contextualized within a given site. This project consists of 2 parts:
Assignment 2a (Group)
DISCOVERING THE SITE & ITS GENIUS LOCI
The main aim of Project 2a is to identify and analyze the site context for design exploration. In groups, carry
out a thorough research and site analysis.
Assignment 2b (Individual)
VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE
Assignment 2b explores architectural response within the context of the site and programmatic requirements
of interpretive centre. The purpose is to showcase interpretive material related to the context/place. The
project should apply the knowledge gained from Project 1, particularly organizing and articulating spaces
and the sensuality and poetics of space to inform user’s experiences within the architecture. Emphasis is
given to design resolution integrating site, program and spatial poetic.
Architecture Design Studio 3 [ARC 2116] PROJECT 1A & 1B
Project 1 Journey for the 5 senses
LEARNING OUTCOME:
LEARNING OUTCOME:
1. Identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience
2. Identify and analyze case studies to inform the design project
3. Create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space
4. Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures
5. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas.
1(a) PRECEDENT STUDIES: Analysing spatial poetics & spatial typologies in architecture
1(b) The Journey for the 5 senses
Assignment 1b explores spatial typologies and poetics through the design of a simple space within a
hypothetical site.
BUILDING SERVICES [ARC 2423] PROJECT 2: INTEGRATED BUILDING SERVICES AND DESIGN PROJECT
PROJECT 2: INTEGRATED BUILDING SERVICES AND DESIGN PROJECT
Project 2 is an integration between this module and the previous design studio project. Each student is required to propose the services systems relevant to their building design i.e. cold water supply, sewerage & sanitary, fire safety, air conditioning and electrical. Students are encouraged to study the appropriate standards for the particular services system i.e. Uniform Building By-Law or other related Acts, prior to the implementation of the system into their designs. In this assignment students will demonstrate their understanding of the basic principles and application of various building services. It will also encourage students to become more aware of the importance in the planning of building services systems and the impact it may have on their designs.
